Research Engineer, Retrieval & Search, Applied Engineering

The role

This role focuses on developing retrieval and search algorithms that enable core product experiences across OpenAI's API and ChatGPT platforms. The engineer will bridge research innovation and production deployment, working cross-functionally to scale search capabilities to internet-scale systems serving millions of users.

What you'd do

• Design and implement retrieval algorithms addressing document, enterprise, knowledge, and web-scale search challenges
• Deploy search methodologies to production systems within API and ChatGPT products
• Investigate emerging research directions in retrieval and search to inform product strategy
• Collaborate with researchers, engineers, product managers, and designers on feature development

What they're looking for

• Proven track record building and maintaining production machine learning systems
• Experience with vector databases, search indices, or comparable data storage for retrieval
• Background developing and iterating on large-scale internet search infrastructure
• Ability to own problems end-to-end and acquire necessary knowledge independently
• Capacity to execute rapidly in ambiguous environments with shifting priorities
